Interests:
Matthew Affron teaches modern art (1850-1950) of Europe and the United States. His courses focus on the social history of art, theories of modernism, and the political uses of art. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University. He has published in the journal Word and Image and in catalogues for exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and , and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, and is co-editor of Fascist Visions: Art and Ideology in France and Italy. In 2004 he became Director of Special Curatorial Projects at the University of Virginia Art Museum.
