Department of Drama

Designed and built by Thomas Jefferson and founded in 1819 on the principle that the liberal arts constitute the foundation for any education, the University of Virginia continues to be the top ranked public institution in the nation. The Department of Drama has developed its undergraduate and graduate curricula in concert with the ideals and objectives of this great university. Each year, outstanding undergraduates and graduates are drawn to the University's prestigious liberal arts program which serves as the foundation of the creative focus and energy of our theatre work. The Department of Drama has modern facilities which accommodate all of our classroom, studio, and production activities. The complex includes two theatres-the 595 seat Culbreth Theatre, with its well-equipped proscenium stage, and the flexible Helms Theatre with 160-200 seats. Large and modern scene, costume, and property shops, as well as rehearsal studios, dressing rooms, and a computer lab complete the picture.
