Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures

The German Department regularly invites colleagues from other academic institutions in the US, Germany, Austria and Switzerland to present and discuss their work in a departmental lecture-series. Normally, five or six speakers visit us per academic year. At times, we also cooperate with other departments and institutions at UVa (such as the Forum for Contemporary Thought) in order to reach a larger audience and to attract a variety of interesting scholars. The lecture series has been open to both established scholars with an international reputation as well as to colleagues who are at the start of a promising career. Renowned scholars who have presented lectures include - among others - Peter Wapnewski, Andreas Huyssen, Juergen Habermas, Winfried Menninghaus, Carol Jacobs, Marianne Schuller, Rainer Naegele and Hans-Thies Lehmann. This list of academics is supplemented by a list of writers, whose ranks have included Christoph Keller, Martin Walser, Peter Schneider and others.
