Department of History

The Corcoran Department of History offers courses of study leading to the M.A. and the Ph.D. degree and is a leader in the field of digital history. In addition, the department offers special programs in historical editing and historic preservation (with the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation at Monticello), and, in collaboration with the University of Virginia School of Law, a joint M.A. and Ph.D. program in legal history. Instruction and research are offered in thirteen fields of world history. The largest single portion of the faculty teaches American history; in addition, the excellent legal history program, and the Carter G. Woodson Institute of African-American and African Studies enrich American history offerings. The second largest group of faculty and graduate students is in European history. Here the department can offer unusually broad coverage, with courses in French, German, Italian, British, and Russian history, as well as separate fields in Ancient and Medieval history. The Department also has strength in African, Latin American, East Asian, South Asian, and Middle East history.
