Department of Microbiology

The MII graduate program serves as an entry point for students interested in immunology, infectious diseases, biodefense, cancer and cell regulation. This portal of entry into graduate studies at the University of Virginia encompasses various programs of study, each with its own specialized identity, requirements, and character. Thus, it offers a wide variety of choices and flexibility within the scope of modern biological and medical research. Students in this program study with world-renowned scientists who are dedicated to education and research excellence. Our students come from diverse academic, social and ethnic backgrounds and from universities throughout the United States as well as from Europe, Latin America, Canada, and Asia. They typically have undergraduate degrees in physics, chemistry, biochemistry or biology. Many have worked for a number of years after graduating from college.
