To Our Readers
In this issue, we honor educational outreach, research about the art and the science of teaching, and the crucial role these play in a democratic society.
At the University of Virginia, architects, mathematicians, and leading experts in educational psychology and many others contribute to the good of the community. Fruitful collaborations both within the University and well beyond are yielding important results.
David W. Breneman, University Professor and Dean of the Curry School of Education, comments that his faculty members cross disciplinary and professional boundaries to tackle problems that are beyond the grasp of single scholars and individual approaches. “As schools increasingly embrace academic diversity, Curry’s collaborative approach to problem solving is providing innovative solutions to classroom challenges”, he states. “Analyzing observational data of early childhood development, diagnosing and treating children who are unable to read or have speech and language disorders, examining the role of entrepreneurship in higher education – these are among the issues that are pushing us to redefine the School and its approach to problem solving. In short, the world is changing, and the Curry School is working to remain at the forefront of emerging trends in today’s evolving educational environment”.
Teachers can be especially effective when they teach through doing. Faculty in the School of Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, and in the School of Continuing and Professional Studies lead the way in their efforts to combine excellent teaching, cutting-edge research and community service.
