Joseph Humphrey's career was forever changed by something his children once mentioned on a Portuguese beach. "They said, 'Look at those spiders, they're flying away,'" said Johnson, a professor of engineering and applied science at the University of Virginia. What he saw while on vacation with his family were spiders releasing thin strands of web to catch the wind and launch themselves through the air. Shortly after returning home, he noticed more spiders doing the same thing. The engineer knew his life was about to take a new turn - he wanted to study biology.
