Master Naturalists program aims at outreach
Posted 9/12/07According to legend, "Shenandoah" meant "daughter of the stars" to American Indians who inhabited the valley long ago. It refers to a creation story that involves the stars placing jewels in the river that still sparkle today.
That's where the newest chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist program, based in Front Royal, got its name, and those in charge of the program hope to instill in its participants an appreciation and respect for the lands these native people so poetically christened.
"We want to get people turned on to the environment," said Candace Lutzow-Felling, director of education for Blandy Experimental Farm.
